We love movies—they help us escape from reality and share stories we connect with. But every so often, a film transcends entertainment and reaches us on a deeper level—sometimes even changing our lives. Radiating Joy: The Michelle Duppong Story is one of those films. Fr. Mike Schmitz explains why we should all have our calendars marked for November 12, the only day this movie is showing in theaters:
On December 29, 2014, while serving as the Director of Adult Faith Formation for the Diocese of Bismarck, Michelle Duppong received a life-changing diagnosis: cancer. Before this, she had dedicated six years as a FOCUS missionary, sharing her faith with boundless enthusiasm. Michelle faced her illness with incredible courage and grace, embodying her deep trust in God until her final day on December 25, 2015. She passed away at just 31 years old, leaving behind an inspiring legacy of faith, joy, and resilience.
On June 16, 2022, it was revealed that a formal investigation into Dupong’s life would begin. Later that year, on All Saints Day, the process for her beatification was initiated, recognizing her reputation for holiness and reports of miracles attributed to her intercession—one of which involved the healing of a woman with the same type of cancer Dupong had. In November 2022, Bishop David Kagan officially declared her a , during a ceremony at the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit in Bismarck.
